Student Affairs Transformational Experience
Student Affairs Transformational Experience (SATE) - Recognized departmental sponsored student experiences within the Division of Student Affairs that have intentional impacts for students and produce transformational experiences through reflection within the co-curricular. SATE designated experiences will contribute to participants’ lifelong learning, global citizenship, career readiness/development, and applied learning to a variety of settings.
Student Affairs Transformational Experiences (SATE) offers two tier level designations available to division departments, both including structured and periodic reflection, assessed student learning and record keeping of student participation.
- SATE: Minimally, to contain structured and periodic reflection and assessed student learning as a requirement. These less involved experiences designated as having high impact practice elements should also include investment of time and effort in purposeful tasks which result in learning.
- SATE (Advanced): Meet 4 or more of the 8 domain criteria (high impact practice elements) from the Division of Student Affairs SATE rubric, with structured and periodic reflection and assessed student learning as a requirement. Domains noted below.
Both levels are strongly encouraged to include learning experience outcomes that associate with Texas A&M Undergraduate Learning Outcomes or National Association of Colleges & Employer (NACE) competencies or other theoretical framework appropriated by the experience.
Student Affairs Transformational Experiences Domains
- Quality and connection of shared experience outcomes to Undergraduate Learning Outcomes, and/or NACE career readiness competencies or other theoretical framework.
- Investment of time and effort in purposeful tasks which result in learning.
- Interaction with staff or faculty, and peers which contributes to the personal body of knowledge.
- Exposed to a variety of experiences that will prompt them to engage in thoughtful conversations or introspection about cultural or societal topics.
- Frequent, timely, and constructive feedback which allows for learning and development.
- Integrate learning from students' curricular and co-curricular experiences.
- Awareness of individual impacts to the self, others, and the larger world.
- Structured reflection and assessment plans to measure student learning occurring in the experience.
SATE recognition process (contact Student Affairs Planning, Assessment & Research): For both levels include initial identification through the Division of Student Affairs yearly annual reporting/program inventory. Committee on Student Learning members and the Assistant Director of Student Affairs Planning, Assessment & Research will help departments develop programs identified as potential SATE. Per the program inventories submitted by division departments in their 2022-23 annual reporting, there is the potential that 215 programs could be recognized as a developing or top tier SATE as they were reported to already include a reflection and/or assessment as part of the experience.
