The rich musical tradition of Texas A&M University extends beyond the two most visible Aggie ensembles, the Fightin’ Texas Band and the Singing Cadets. Along with those storied groups, the Division of Student Affairs’ Department of Music Activities serves over 1,300 students who participate in four concert bands, three choirs, two jazz bands, two orchestras, and a dance band.

While the University does not have a traditional music degree program, Music Activities attracts students who wish to continue making music while they pursue their education in other fields.  Many of these musicians were members of the All-State Bands, Choirs and Orchestras, which leads to ensembles that perform at a similar level as other leading schools of music.

The Department also arranges for nationally known composers and conductors to visit campus and work with the ensembles. Concerts and performances are scheduled each semester to give the students the opportunity to play for the campus and local community as well as other venues across the state, country and even around the world. Professionally produced recordings allow many more to experience performances.  Music Activities also partners with the Department of Performance Studies so that students receive academic credit for their participation, as well as High Impact Practice credit.

In addition to the cultural and artistic aspects, the bands and choirs allow students the opportunity to have social connections, an environment of teamwork and dedication, a respite from rigorous scholastic demands. The Department of Music Activities not only provides students with a wide variety of engagement opportunities, but also creates a home for the musically talented students at Texas A&M University.

Construction on a new Music Activities Center will begin soon and the new facility will allow the Department to serve more students and continue to provide the campus community a diverse musical experience.
