What to Do if You've been Sexually Assaulted

If the incident just occurred, please see the Emergency Contacts and/or Emergency Contraception.

  • Contact the police, an anonymous, "Jane / John Doe," report may be filed while deciding whether to pursue criminal charges

  • Seek assistance from a victim’s advocate (Individuals trained to assist victims through legal, medical, and University procedures as well as to provide emotional support)

  • Assist in preserving evidence (Try not to change clothes, shower, douche, comb hair, brush teeth, eat or drink, urinate)

  • Seek medical attention (Regardless of the desire to press charges or not, medical evaluation is important to address physical injuries which may not be readily apparent)

  • Explore legal (Criminal and/or Civil Charges) and/or University disciplinary options

If the incident occurred sometime in the past

  • Consider filing an informational report with the police

  • Seek emotional support (Through individual, group, or web-based counseling)

  • Explore legal and/or University disciplinary options (Although time may have passed, there may be options that remain)

  • Seek assistance from a victim’s advocate (On-campus, this individual can help with academic concerns, residence hall relocation, judicial procedures, etc.)

  • Seek medical assistance if you have not had an evaluation since the assault
