Student Assistance is a support service focused on the well being of Texas
A&M University students. Designated professional staff members on the
Division of Student Affairs Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and in
the Department of Student Life are trained to provide Texas A&M University
students guidance, resources, and support when dealing with personal struggles,
managing crisis situations, and/or handling emergencies. Students and their
families can look to Student Assistance Services as a professional source
for individual consultation and connection to Texas A&M University campus
resources, programs and services. To access these services, please contact
Student Life at (979) 845-3113.
Student Assistance Services can offer the following examples of guidance,
resources, and support to students experiencing academics, physical, and social/emotional
challenges.
Academic Support
Class Absence Notification
Students may find themselves missing classes due to an emergency situation.
The Class Absence Notification process is designed to serve as an easy central
point of contact for students who need their professors notified of their
absence. Upon the request of student, the Department of Student Life notifies
the student’s academic college of the absence. The academic college
then contacts the individual instructor(s) with the information provided.
Students will need to provide a student id number, email address, dates of
absence, and reason for absence when they request a class absence notification.
Students are also responsible for following up with their individual faculty
members to make-up any graded assignments missed during their absence from
campus. The Class Absence Notification process does not constitute a University
excused absence. Texas A&M University Student Rule 7 outlines the University’s
policy on class attendance.
Academic procedure resource and REFERRALS
Students often need some outside assistance in making decisions about continuing
courses, withdrawing, refund schedules and deadlines. The Department of
Student Life Student Assistance Services specialist can provide guidance
on institutional rules and procedures, as well as connect students to appropriate
academic staff for specific college knowledge and procedures.
Social/Emotional Support
Personal Health Resources
Emotional recovery and behavior support is essential to overcoming personal
obstacles. Texas A&M University provides many student resources to meet
individual needs and aid in student success. Departments and services such
as Student Counseling Services, Alcohol and Drug Education Programs, Women’s
and Gender Equity Resource Center, Student Health Center, and Disability Services
are designed to assist students with emotional and physical support. Student
Assistance Services in the Department of Student Life and the Critical Incident
Response Team can assist with connecting students to professionals as appropriate
or as needed.
Communication and Coordination of needs
When requested by the student, Student Assistance Services can communicate
information regarding the student’s particular situation to roommates,
student organizations and advisors, and/or employers. In addition, the Student
Assistance Services staff can serve as a point of contact related to assisting
families with accommodations, gathering resource information, and answering
questions about University policies.
Physical Support
Accommodations
When a student has been injured or displaced, Student Assistance Services
can help connect students to Texas A&M University services that accommodate
students with temporary or permanent disabilities. For example, Disabilities
Services can help students arrange academic accommodations related to temporary
and permanent disabilities. For students living on campus, Residence Life
can assist with accessible living arrangements. For students living off campus,

advocate in arranging appropriate accommodations.
