Partnerships: Faculty and Student Affairs

In the best of all possible worlds, your students can practice what you teach, while you teach it.  Welcome to the best of all possible worlds!

Faculty all across campus are teaming up with departments in the Division of Student Affairs to offer students an exciting array of in-depth learning experiences that combine inside- and outside-the-classroom activities.  This month's highlights are presented below, but so many possibilities remain unexplored!  We hope you'll visit this page often to see what's happening.  Better yet, let us know how we can help you!  Student Affairs:  A learning laboratory you can use!

The Cultural Leadership Understanding and Exploration for Sophomores (CLUES) Learning Community

Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications (ALEC) and the Department of Multicultural Services partnered to create this learning community for sophomore Aggies.  The emphasis?  Multiculturalism, diversity/sensitivity, and leadership.  Based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, CLUES accepts 20 fellows annually.  ALEC faculty and administrators from Multicultural Services work together to plan every aspect of a course these students take during both the Fall and Spring semesters.  If you would like more information about this joint project, or if you would like to find out how you can tap into the resources offered by Multicultural Services, please contact Interim Director Jennifer Ford at jennifer-ford@tamu.edu.

Engineering Living Learning Community

When the Dwight Look College of Engineering teamed up with the Department of Residence Life to create a community of scholars geared toward helping first-year engineering students transition to college and commit to academic excellence, they had some very definite goals in mind:

  • increasing the retention rates of freshman in engineering
  • providing services that enhance and add to the value of students studying engineering
  • providing an environment conducive to building a strong, cohesive peer support system that will serve participants throughout their academic and professional careers.

Aggies in the ELLC can attend monthly seminars adressing issues like social needs, globalization, and personal development and learning.  They can hook up with upper-division engineering students, who serve as mentors, tutors, and facilitators.  If you would like to know more about the community and/or explore similar possibilities for your own college, please visit http://essap.tamu.edu/ellc/ or contact Jacqueline Hodge at 979.847.8887
