On behalf of the entire Division of Student Affairs, we are pleased to welcome each of you to the start of an exciting academic year at Texas A&M University. Special greetings to the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2020 who kicked off a new tradition by taking their class photo on Kyle Field.
As we enter this year, I’d like to challenge each of you to carry forward the concept of “Aggie Mindfulness.” Merriam-Webster defines mindfulness as, “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” Mindfulness wrapped within the Spirit of Aggieland, aka “Aggie Mindfulness,” might best be described as being fully aware of the Texas A&M Core Values as you experience the richness of our campus traditions, community, and environment all the while adding value to your fellow Aggies’ experiences and wellbeing.
As is sung in The Spirit of Aggieland, “We are the Aggies, the Aggies are we, true to each other as Aggies can be.” Therefore, Aggie Mindfulness is the 12th Man, Silver Taps, Muster, the Aggie Honor Code, Step In. Stand Up., Tell Somebody, and StopHate. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we practice the art of Aggie Mindfulness.
Whether you’re just beginning your Aggie career as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student or beginning your final semester, I encourage you to actively carry Aggie Mindfulness in all that you do, say, and participate in.
Gig ’Em Aggies!
