A 21ST CENTURY EDUCATION

Final Corps Leadership Learning Centers Open

On Friday, Aug. 5th, the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University opened the final two of four planned Leadership Learning Centers (LLCs) The Susan and Michael J. Plank ’83 Leadership Learning Center and the Stephen C. Ash ’87 Leadership Learning Center will help facilitate the academic success of Corps members.

The new LLCs were funded with multimillion-dollar commitments from the Planks and the Grady Ash Foundation. These gifts follow others made by Anthony G. Buzbee ’90 and H. Grady Ash Jr. ’58 to fund the first two Corps LLCs that opened in 2012 and 2014.

The approximately 17,000-square-foot LLCs will provide cadets with state-of-the-art facilities including group and individual study rooms, computer labs, tutoring rooms, lounges and even a Starbucks. This environment will create a 21st century living-learning community for cadets to collaborate and relax.

A former cadet and mechanical engineering graduate, Michael Plank  serves as president and CEO of the Houston-based Plank Companies Inc. He and his wife Susan reside in Houston.

Stephen Ash, a finance graduate, is  managing senior vice president of the real estate firm Transwestern Commercial Services.

These multimillion-dollar commitments represent only a portion of the renovations currently underway in the Quad. Following the 2013-2014 academic year, the university embarked on a three year project to renovate all current Corps dorms and the surrounding areas. Totaling over $266 million, almost every aspect of the quad is seeing improvements.
The majority of the construction is expected to be completed this fall, with portions of the renovations being completed by fall 2017.
